Metal Detector FAQs

A metal detector is an electronic device employed to detect traces of metal, generally from the ground, a person, or cargo. Metal detectors can effectively penetrate through soil, wood and other non-metallic materials.

How does it work?

Metal detectors use the principal of electromagnetism. Typically, a metal detector comprises an electronic box, transmitter, a receiver antenna and a battery case. By battery power, the transmitter generates a magnetic field. If a metal item passes through the metal detector, it becomes magnetized due to the effect of the magnetic field. On receiving the electromagnetic signature, the receiver sends a signal to the electronic box. There is a speaker to amplify this signal. This produces a beep sound, indicating that there is metal contamination.

What are the different types of metal detectors?

Depending on specific situations, different types of metal detectors are available. For example, there are metal detectors exclusively for prospecting gold. Likewise, special metal detectors are available for relic hunting. Underwater metal detectors, coin detectors, and walk through metal detectors are other prominent types. Multi-purpose metal detectors are also popular nowadays.

What is product effect?

When passing through the metal detector, some food stuffs tend to generate a signal although no metal is present in them. This is known as product effect. It is mainly due to factors including acidity, fat content, moisture content, salinity and temperature.

What are the factors that affect the sensitivity of metal detectors?

Product effect, size and type of metal contaminants, and metal detector opening size are some of the factors that affect metal detector sensitivity.

What is the warm up time for metal detectors after the power is on?

For accurate detection of metals, metal detectors must be allowed to warm up for at least 30 minutes after the power is on.

Can burned and rustic metals be detected using metal detectors?

Yes. But, the detection sensitivity is based on the shape and orientation of the contaminants. In addition, it is difficult to detect minute particles.

Can metal detectors detect non-metallic contaminants?

Metal detectors cannot detect non-metallic contaminants.

What are the accessories required in metal detecting?

Among the accessories required for metal detecting are gloves, probe, knife, gator digger, and ground cloth.

What are the precautions to be taken when cleaning metal detectors?

To clean the main unit of metal detectors, hot water less than 40 degrees centigrade can be used. The dirt and particles present in the detector head must be cleaned frequently. It is also necessary to clean its conveyor belts. Neutral detergent and a plastic brush with soft bristles can be applied for the purpose.

Detector Operation

What a hobby! Metal detecting is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the world. Why? It is the only hobby you get paid to do, if you learn the proper operation of your metal detector, where to hunt for "treasure" and avoid common mistakes. You can make money, build some great coin collections, get healthy exercise, relax and experience some wonderful excitement too.

For metal detecting to be rewarding it is essential that you have a basic understanding of how a metal detector operates. All metal detectors have an invisible field around the coil or loop as it is sometimes called. When this field comes in contact with metal either underneath it in the ground (or in the water) or sometimes above it in the air, the detector gives a signal. This is a simple description of how a hand held metal detector works.

There are three general types of metal detectors in use in the hobby. The oldest type is the BFO (Beat Frequency Oscilator). Ther are simple to use but limited in their depth capabilities. The most common type is the VLF (Very Low Frequency) and they have many great features with the cost increasing in a direct relation to the bells and whistles that are added. These capabilities or features include: discrimination, Notch Discrimination, Target Identification, Target Tone ID, Target Signature, Multiple Signature, Multiple Frequency, Silent Search, Ground Balance, Depth Reading and several others including some computer visualization features. The third type is the PI (Pulse Induction). This type is generally not good at discriminating targets but work best in highly mineralized soil like gold fields and are excellent in salt water beach detecting. The PI and VLF (operating in all metal frequency) have far superior depth to the older BFO units. Depth is important but not the most important element to metal detecting success. I have dug more than 150,000 coins (and thousands of other treasures) and 80 percent of them have been less than 5-7 inches deep and even the older BFO units can go these depths in lightly mineralized soil. The single most important element to metal detecting success is knowledge. Let us examine the basic features of metal detectors that will increase the success potential.

All metal detectors have a loop or coil. Each coil type has its own special characteristics. The two most common types are the concentric and the double "D". Both of these are wide scan coils. This means that nearly the whole loop area will receive signals from metal objects that are not buried deep. This is easily seen by putting a penny or dime on top of the ground that is clear of other metal and move the coil back and forth over it at just and inch or two above the ground. Neraly every area of the coil will elicit a signal from the coin. Now raise the coil to about four or five inches above the coin and do the same movements again. This time not all areas of the coil will obtain a signal. The higher you raise the coil above the coin the smaller the area of the coil receives a signal. The field that is emitted from these standards coils is in essence cone shaped. The deeper a coin or other metal object is buried the greater the need to overlap the coil sweep.

Most metal detectors come with a standard coil size of 8-10 inches. For most coin and jewelry hunting this is best. If an area has a lot of trash or junk metals a smaller 4-6 inch loop could increase the number of good finds. The larger the loop the greater the depth capabilities but 12-16 coils will also be less sensitive to smaller size targets and are harder to pinpoint. The smaller coils will not go as deep but can find the smaller nugget size items and are much easier to pinpoint targets. Two other shaped coils are also becoming popular. The elliptical coils have similar depth levels of the round ones but give greater search area. The "Big Foot" coil is becoming very popular with competition hunters is also called the "figure eight" loop. This coil is very efficient for fast searching at deeper levels. The search area of this narrow 18 inch rectangular coil is nearly the entire coil with very little cone effect. White's Metal Detector Company has popularized this coil and made it very easy to pinpoint targets.

It is very important that you understand your detector's coil features. The easiest way to do this is to do an air test with a coin. Keeping the coil in a horizontal position, turn the detector on and adjust it for coin hunting. Take a penny or dime and move it back and forth in all directions and various depth levels determining the cone effect, the coil effects at shallow distances, sensitivity around the coil edges and how to adjust your detector for its best depth. Turning the coin on its edge and doing the same movements will also help with understanding the signals from coins turned on edge in the ground.

As I mentioned earlier, the single most important key to success with a metal detector is knowledge. The first source of information is your owner's manual. Read your operator's manual through several times. After reading it go practice using your detector. Repeat this process until you understand all of the characteristics of your machine.

Another great help with your metal detector is field tests found in treasure magazines or online. Experienced users making a field test on the same model detector that you own can add to your knowledge. Metal detector forums online also provide informative comments on detector use. There are also some great metal detector dealerships that offer assistance with training on detectors that they sell.

Utilize the operational techniques discussed above and practice, practice, practice! Knowledge plus skill delivers results. There is treasure everywhere to be found and it can be yours. Here's to "diggin it"! Larry

Smoke detectors

A few weeks ago, my tiny town suffered a horrific tragedy. An older home caught fire in the middle of the night and killed one adult and his four grandchildren. The grandmother made it out of the house in time saying that a smoke alarm woke her up. In our little community, this was an extremely big loss and we were all left wondering how this could happen. When we read in the local newspaper that a smoke alarm had gone off, we wondered why the other five people did not hear it in time.

As the cold sets in and we all prepare for winter, please take a moment to check all of the smoke detectors in your house. Check them regularly and keep extra batteries on hand just in case. We will all be turning our furnaces on soon and it is a good idea to make sure that all of the smoke detectors in your home are working properly. It is recommended that when you set your clocks to coincide with daylight savings changes you also check the batteries in your smoke alarms. Doing so more often is an even better idea.

I live in a small house that is only about eight hundred square feet. There are four smoke detectors in the main level and one in the basement. I have also put up a carbon monoxide detector in the sleeping quarters. Practically every home has several smoke alarms but fewer than necessary have carbon monoxide detectors.

Please go out today and get enough carbon monoxide and smoke detectors for every area of your home. If you have alarms but they are too far away from your sleeping area, they may not be able to warn you in time. Breathing in smoke or carbon monoxide for only a few minutes is enough to render you unconscious and in serious danger. This of course happens more quickly to children.

The children who died last month ranged in age from thirteen years to thirteen months. The oldest was a strong and healthy football player who should have been able to get out of that house. The only way this situation makes sense to me is if the smoke detectors in the house did not all work properly. Please read these words and commit to taking action before you learn this lesson the hard way as my little town did. Fire spreads quickly and can be uncontrollable within seconds. Protect yourself and your family every way that you can. Be thoughtful and proactive when it comes to the safety of your family.

Radar Detector

Radar Detector

For the longest time I thought everyone had a radar detector in his or her car or truck. My stepfather had one for the longest time, but I never really understood what it was or knew that it was actually illegal to own one. He spent a lot of time speeding due to his profession, and it became a habit for him to have one. As a truck driver, he often had to exceed the speed limit to get his load in on time, and this piece of equipment apparently warned him when there was radar nearby.

I know now that they are illegal. I learned this when he got pulled over once and he tore it down and shoved it under his seat so the police officer couldn’t see it. Though he was not caught with it, he later told me that if he had been caught with it he would have been in a lot of trouble. He hasn’t used on in years, and I guess you could say he has slowed down quite a bit. Perhaps it was the birth of his granddaughter that did it, but he no longer feels the need to use a radar detector because he rarely speeds any longer.

By definition, a radar detector alerts someone when a police officer is using radar to determine the speed of the drivers going by on the road. I would think that by the time the radar detector alerted you that it would be too late anyway. I haven’t seen on in a very long time, but I am sure they still exist. I don’t know if they really alert anyone soon enough to avoid a ticket, but I do know that the best way to avoid the ticket is to just slow down and stay within safe driving limits.

If you are considering getting one, know that radar detectors are illegal in most states, if not all states. If you get one it will be up to you if you think it is worth it to have it in the car if you get stopped. You may try to hide your radar detector, but you may be spotted with one and be in a whole bunch of trouble. Also remember that by the time a radar detector alerts you to the presence of someone clocking your time, it may be too late to slow down to avoid detection.

Metal Detector

Metal Detector

I have always wanted a metal detector. I remember seeing people with them when I was a young child, and I was fascinated with a machine that could tell you when something was buried underground. I never had one, though that didn’t mean my fascination with this type of technology would end. When I see an advertisement on television for a metal detector, I often stopped to watch it. I guess I’m a pretty practical person however, because I just don’t see myself ever owning one.

I can see were having a metal detector would be a lot of fun. But as would anything, there are some things to consider. You can use a metal detector just about anywhere you wish, but that does not mean you can dig anywhere you wish. If you dig in the wrong spot, you may dig up some sort of power or cable lines. If you do this, you may end up being in a lot of trouble. If you have ever had to take anything in your yard, you have probably had to call someone to make sure you are not digging where any lines are buried. Though these lines may not set off a metal detector, that does not mean you will not run into some if you were to dig.

If you want to find a great place to use a metal detector, you may want to use one on the beach. For the most part, you will never find any wires of any sort there. People lose all sorts of things on the beach, and you never know what you may fight. There is even more benefit to using a metal detector on the beach than you may have realized. Just the act of walking around with it for an extended period of time means that you are getting the exercise you need. I suspect this is part of the reason why people like to use them.

These are not to be confused with a metal detector you may find at the airport. These are not so much fun. When you are boarding a flight you have to remember to take everything metal off of your body, or you are going to be too late. While I understand that these are necessary, I still resent having to go through the metal detector time and time again because I forgot to take some change out of my pocket, or perhaps because it is so sensitive it is picking up on my zipper.
